Luke's Leaders Volunteer Recruitment

2024-25 School Year

This fall, the week of September 9, we will be kicking off the next year of Luke's Leaders!

Luke’s Leaders is a weekly, after-school leadership development initiative created by the Outreach and Justice Ministry of St. Luke’s UMC. We work with a variety of community partners, such as the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis and Peace Learning Center, to bring this leadership development programming to students of Washington Township, aged 10 to 14. Through a combination of hands-on experiences, mentorship, and partnerships with local youth-serving organizations, we aim to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to create meaningful changes.

Are you interested in joining us as a volunteer?
Here are some basics:
  • Student sessions will be on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. The Wednesday sessions are at St Luke’s from 5-6:30 pm, the Tuesday and Thursday programs are held at the schools – Northview, Westlane, and Eastwood from 4:30-6pm.
  • Your role as a volunteer includes attending 2/3rds of the sessions, get to know students, develop trusting relationships, engage in all facilitated activities along with the students as guided by the facilitators, and call out and address exceptions to expectations.
  • NEW this year – we need 6 volunteer drivers! Help us shuttle students on Wednesday nights in one of our newly purchased passenger vans. These vans are like driving an SUV or minivan and DO NOT require a special license or training.
To volunteer or for more information please contact Carl Potenza @ (317) 989-3995 or cepotenza@att.net or Tom Lange @ (317) 697-1177 or tom.c.lange@gmail.com

Help Us Get Out the Vote!

August 17 | 9:30-11:30 AM
August 24 | 1:00-3:00 PM
Room N101/102

Do you wonder how you can make a difference in this year's election beyond your own vote? It's as easy as sending a postcard! This is something each of us can do, and we are making it easy for you to join the effort. St. Luke's Justice ministries are championing a postcard-writing campaign to encourage citizens to get out and vote this November. We'll provide the postcards, along with research-backed, non-partisan messages that have proven effective at motivating people to vote. You provide your handwriting and the postage (if you're able). Our goal is to prepare 10,000 postcards in August, and another 10,000 in September. We need your help!

Back to School Bash Recap

What happens when cross-faith groups work to make a positive impact in our community? A successful new beginning for the Back to School Bash!

On Saturday July 27th ,St. Luke’s, 2nd Presbyterian and Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation partnered up with Washington Township School District for a day of fun, fellowship and services. From backpacks to balloon artists, health screenings to hot dogs. We celebrated with approximately 800 families and their school aged children as they embark on a new school year. Through donations and school district buying power we are able to fulfill the needs of over 6,000 students.

Please consider giving to our education fund so we can support our school aged neighbors throughout the year. You can click HERE to donate.
