The Indiana Remembrance Coalition (IRC) is committed to remembering and acknowledging past and present racism. They engage the community through education, reflection, dialogue, and advocacy to promote healing and justice.
The most recent success of IRC is that of the historic Greenlawn Cemetery, founded in 1820. This pioneer burial ground is on the land being excavated for the new Henry St. Bridge. Greenlawn included a segregated burial ground for African Americans that is believed to be directly in the line of the bridge construction. The city planned to begin construction prior to archaeological excavation of human remains. IRC fought against this approach, citing it as the continuing erasure of Black history. This all-volunteer group led a year-long media and letter-writing campaign and was successful in getting the city of Indianapolis to change their approach and do a full-scale archeological excavation before doing any further construction.
