Transition Team | St. Luke's UMC

Transition Team

A Word from Our Chair

We are the individuals who represent you in the transition process. Between us we have hundreds of years of attendance at and involvement with St. Luke's and each of us is proud to perform this role for our congregation. As you read about each person, you will see that we represent involvement across the church's many ministry and leadership areas over the years and today. We also bring to the process a broad range of life and professional experiences, skills, and spiritual gifts.

We are happy to lead this process and look forward to celebrating the incredible legacy of Pastor Rob and to discerning what God has in store for the future of St. Luke's. We ask you and God to bless our work.

JoAnn and I began worshiping at St. Luke's in 2011. I am in my second year serving on the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and now serve as the Chair. Over the years I have led many small groups, led Disciple Bible Study, volunteered in Adult Discipleship, served on the Governing Board, served as Lay Leader, and now SPRC. For 43 years I had an engineering career with Bell Labs and Technicolor. My prayer is to take my professional experience, combine it with my devotion to God and love of St. Luke's, and work with this team to discern who God is calling to lead us into the future. Pray for us!

I'm Donnis Patton and I have been attending St. Luke's for more than 25 years. I have been serving on the Governing Board for the last two years and served as Governing Board Chair last year. I am honored to be in my new role as the Lay Leader, where I have an opportunity to meet more people within our community and to have greater involvement in working with the Leadership Committees here at St. Luke's. I have been in a Small Group at St. Luke's for the past 14 years which has been a wonderful experience. I have also enjoyed being involved in Disciple Bible Study and several Faith-Based Bible Studies here at St. Luke's. All these activities have helped me deepen my faith. I am truly inspired by the way that St. Luker's live out their faith in so many diverse ways within our community. We have a truly unique open community of Christians here who lead with love and truly embody the values of living a Christ-Centered Life. As part of this Transition Team, I realize that Pastor Rob leaves some "big shoes to fill" but it is my hope and prayer that our next Senior Pastor can build on our strengths and help grow an ever growing and evolving St. Luke's for the future.

I'm Kathy Armington and St. Luke's has been my church home for nearly 30 years. I am in my third year of service on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. I am currently part of the Online Leadership Committee (I am now permanently remote, living in Southwest Florida), host the online feeds of our contemporary worship services and special events, and lead various adult discipleship groups, mostly the Disciple Bible Study series and sermon discussions. Some of my past areas of involvement include the former Youth Ministry Task Force, cheffing for the Vacation Bible School and Freedom School initiatives, and helping initiate the Lenten Small Groups program. My career was in sales leadership in the life sciences field. I am thrilled and humbled to be part of the committee at this time to help in shepherding the congregation through this transition process and look forward to lending my experience in candidate interviewing, hospitality, and project management to this important project to celebrate the legacy of Pastor Rob and identify the pathway to the future for our incredible St. Luke's community.

My name is John Baker, and I have attended St. Luke's for about 25 years. After participating in Disciple Bible Study more than 15 years ago, I joined a small group that remains together still today. I serve as a Senior Judge, having just completed 50 years of judicial service. This has allowed me to perform several weddings for couples in my small group and others in our church before our pastors were authorized to do same-sex marriages. I served on Staff Parish Relations Committee for 8 years and then with the Governing Board for 7 years, and I recently rejoined the Governing Board. I serve on Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary's Board of Trustees and have had the privilege to serve on a Presidential Search Committee for that Seminary, and I pray this experience is as fulfilling.

My name is Dee Brown, and I have been a member of St. Luke's for 4 years. I am in my second year of service on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. I also serve as a St. Luke's front office volunteer, usher for Contemporary Service, Hospitality Greeter, and Freedom School volunteer, and I am an active member of two ongoing Small Groups. I feel both blessed and honored to serve on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. My service allows me to actively participate and contribute to St. Luke's diversity and mission of being a open, welcoming church to all. During this time of transition and discernment I will contribute my professional gifts and experience with candidate interviewing, managing HR issues, and leading onboarding activities as our committee seeks to follow God's direction for St. Luke's.

My name is Anne Clark, and my husband Greg and I have been members of St. Luke's for more than 50 years. I am in my first year of serving on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. Having retired as a physician, I now mentor in an entrepreneur class at Butler University. When Midtown become St. Luke's first satellite in 2023, I served on the launch team and co-led the renovation team. Greg and I currently worship at Midtown, volunteering with the KIDS program and maintenance team. We can still be spotted at North Indy worshiping, teaching VBS, and attending many of the programs and classes offered. I previously served as Chair of the Trustees and on the Board of Governors for five years. This afforded me the opportunity to participate in the early phases of Making Room. I also was privileged to be involved in adding several new areas of ministry, including Young Adults, Small Groups, and the Contemporary Service at North Indy. Greg and I have been both students and leaders of the Disciple Bible Study series. St. Luke's is very special loving community. We live into our mission statement of being an open community of Christians helping all people find and give hope through Jesus Christ. I believe God is good, and faithful, and will walk with us on this journey of transition. My role is to be present, be humble, pray, and listen for God's will.

Hello! My name is Cheryl Pletcher and I have been a member of St. Luke's since fall of 2009. This is my fourth year serving on Staff Parish Relations. Besides this responsibility, I have been a member of a small group for six years, meeting weekly to offer support to one other as we grow in our spiritual journeys. I am also on the Call Team for Care and Contemplation, reaching out to members who may or may not attend in person on a regular basis, letting them know that they are ever in our thoughts and prayers. I support the Weekend Warriors project which provides food to children in our community over the weekends. I enjoy my role on the Staff Parish Relations Committee as it affords me the opportunity to view the Church as a whole and also strengthen my support of both our clergy team and staff in a visible, relational manner. I am honored to be a representative on this transition team. As a former school administrator, I pledge to bring not only an open ear but also perspective in the interview process. Knowing that change can be difficult at times, I am prayerfully enthusiastic as we listen for God's will during these next months.

Tom and I have belonged to St. Luke's for 28 years, and I am in my second year of service on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. I previously served on the Governing Board and Lay Leadership and have been active on the New Here Ministry leadership team for the past 6 years and am a Starting Point facilitator. I have served on several search committees and interview teams both in the school systems in which I worked in administrative roles, as well as at Butler University where I serve on the College of Education Advisory Board. I am very happy to be serving on the transition team and believe that Pastor Rob's leadership and the clear mission and vision of our church have prepared us to find a fine leader with great capability to continue the important work our church is doing in our community and in our world.

I am Coach T and I began my journey at St. Luke's as the church reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021. In 2022, I took a step further in my commitment by becoming a member of the congregation. I am in my second year of service on the Staff Parish Relations Committee and am passionate about supporting our church's mission. One of my main current roles is in the children's ministry, where I serve at the check-in counter, having been encouraged by Amy Boles to restart this important service when we welcomed everyone back to campus after the pandemic. Additionally, I had the privilege of being on the building committee and have enjoyed contributing during Vacation Bible School, especially with outdoor recreation and whatever else Amy needed help with from me. I lead a Discipline Bible Study group within which I love fostering spiritual growth and connection in our community. Although I hold an inactive membership with the men's golf club ministry (my daughter keeps me quite busy!) I remain actively engaged in my other church activities, including recently serving on the committee tasked with finding our new contemporary worship director, an important initiative for our congregation. I feel truly blessed and honored to serve on this committee during this transitional time. I look forward to utilizing my spiritual gifts and team-building experience to help shepherd our congregation through this significant process. I'm excited about what the future holds for St. Luke's and for each of us in the community.

I'm Ty Smith and my wife and I have been members of the St. Luke's community for ten years. I am pleased to be serving in my second year on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. I have been and remain active in the Men's Ministry, the Men's Golf League, and SAWs (Servants at Work, a non-profit, volunteer organization that specializes in building wooden wheelchair ramps for low-income, permanently disabled individuals in the Indianapolis area). As a Sales Director in the Tech industry and a baseball coach for the First Baptist Rec League, I bring management, evaluation, and team-building skills to my service for the church. I love the community we have built at St. Luke's and value meeting new families, recognizing mentorship opportunities, and inviting new visitors. It is an honor to be part of the process to identify and evaluate the next wave of talent that will grow the ministry and reach of St. Luke's to those looking to find and expand their faith community, be it in-person or online.
