St. Luke’s partners with other faith communities in the Family Promise network to provide housing for families who are experiencing homelessness. At any one time, 20 families are housed in apartments that are financed and furnished by volunteers. Many apartments are then turned over to the family as their permanent home.
The following volunteer opportunities are available:
- Meal Delivery - Prepare or purchase a meal and deliver it to a family. Families are generally located in the northeast and northwest sections of Indianapolis. Meals are typically delivered on Thursday at dinner time, although other arrangements can be made with the receiving family. Volunteers may provide special meals for celebrations such as holidays and birthdays. Detailed instructions will be provided by one of the St. Luke’s Family Promise Coordinators, including family member names and ages, food restrictions, menu suggestions, etc.
- Apartment Setup – Under the supervision of Family Promise staff, prepare an apartment for a new family to arrive. Tasks might include general cleaning such as sweeping and mopping, kitchen cleanup, changing bedding, etc. Rarely, some painting or significant trash removal is required. Apartments sometimes need to be set up on very short notice, and having a flexible schedule is helpful for volunteers.
- Housewares Drive – Supporters may contribute furniture and other household supplies needed to furnish apartments.
- Fundraising, Financial or Gift-in-Kind Donations – Supporters may contribute financially or with gift-in-kind donations to support two annual Family Promise fundraisers, Night Without a Bed (spring) and Home Sweet Home (fall).
